What Is GEO in SEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation, and it is the practice of getting your business mentioned or cited in answers produced by AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity. As more people ask an AI assistant instead of scrolling through search results, being the source that the AI quotes becomes as valuable as ranking in the traditional listings. GEO overlaps heavily with strong SEO, because these systems favour content that is clear, factually accurate, well-structured, and backed by genuine authority and trust. In practice, I do not treat GEO as a separate service. It is a newer layer that sits on top of solid SEO fundamentals, and doing the fundamentals well is what makes GEO work.
